Jim Denevan

Solar Light Geometry

Miami Beach, FL
2015

Jim Denevan (Santa Cruz, California) is best known for his ephemeral drawings on sand, soil and ice. His sand and light installation Solar Light Geometry evoked sacred geometry: part performance and part land art, the artist occupied the beachfront terrain to create his delicate artwork. During the day, his work acted as a meditative reminder of the fragile beauty of the natural world, while by night his illuminated patterns shone like a beacon for our District.
This mandala of light marked the passage of time and the movement of sun and sand while the use of the solar lamps made subtle reference to the natural forces at our fingertips and the effect we have on our ecologies and geographies. Documentation of Denevan’s work has been exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; MoMA/PS1, The Museum of Arts and Design and the Parrish Art Museum, New York.
